Have you found yourself in a situation that makes you feel so utterly defenseless. It feels as though there’s nothing you can do to change your circumstances. Everything is out of control and nothing feels secure. It’s times like these when my life feels like it’s entangling me and I’m overcome by my fears, doubts and thoughts. I’m in a place of distress and I’m in need of help. I’m in need of a rescue. This isn’t just any rescue. No good-looking prince charming can help save the day this time. I need a much deeper kind of rescue.
Let’s unpack Jeremiah 1:19 and expand on this verse a bit to get a better understanding of how God can rescue us from our dark places.
Jeremiah 1:19
They will fight against you but will not overcome you, for I am with you and will rescue you, declares the Lord.
They will fight against you
The evil in this world can feel like it’s attacking us to our core, debilitating us and resounding lies that choke all traces of God’s voice. I quickly forget that when I feel like I’m being battered and attacked, it’s not an assumption, it’s truly occurring. We are fighting a spiritual battle everyday against the enemy.
In fact, the word fight used here is translated “lacham” in Hebrew. It means to overcome, devour and consume. Satan tries to overcome, devour and consume us everyday to pull us down into a pit of despair. He’s targeting us to get us defeated. He is fighting against us to lose all hope and faith in God. He delights when we grow discouraged. He laughs when we doubt God. He smiles when we let negative thoughts consume our minds, making us feel inadequate.
Deuteronomy 3:22
Do not be afraid of them; the LORD your God himself will fight for you.
But will not overcome you
The word “overcome” used here can be translated into “yakol” which means “to have power.” Even though Satan’s lies feel so dominating, God reminds us that he doesn’t have the ability to overcome. Even with the endless attacks we may receive, allowing us to feel defeated and defenseless, we have Someone fighting for us. When God is on our side, we will not be overcome. Because of God, we are an overcomer. We will not be defeated, because God is making a way. He’s at battle, fighting for you.
For, I am with you and will rescue you
In times of darkness and discouragement it can feel like God has abandoned you and allowed Satan to overtake possession of your circumstances. Sometimes it feels like more than you can handle and God has stepped aside, leaving you to fight your battles alone.
When difficult circumstances have arisen in my own life I have found that friends have left my side when I was most in need of comfort. When I thought I finally had found a friend who I could rely on, I experienced abandonment yet again. Even through all the rejections from my past, I have found this to be true: when others left my side, I found that it allowed God and I to draw closer than ever before.
God reminds us that He is with us, it’s a fact, not a feeling. The next time you “feel” like God has abandoned you to fight the battles raging on your heart on your own, remember God’s promise. He is with you. He’s not taking a break from the fiery attacks, but He’s fighting right along your side every step of the way and He will rescue you.
Psalm 34:7
The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them.
Upon researching, rescue, in Hebrew can also be translated as “recover.” God not only rescues us from our troubles, He also helps us recover from the damage that has occurred during the battle. The wounds that scarred you aren’t forgotten. God’s using them for good and He’s at work within you to help you grow and restore you once again.
The pain that cuts so deep, feeling like nothing could ever heal the wounds that broke your heart, God is at work to restore and mend what has been broken. In His perfect timing, God’s going to rescue you from this dark place and will renew your brokenness into a glorious victory.
Psalm 71:20
Though you have made me see troubles, many and bitter, you will restore my life again; from the depths of the earth you will again bring me up.
That’s pretty amazing that in Hebrew “rescue” also means “recover”. I love that picture of God not only rescuing us, but also restoring us. The hardest part is waiting for the rescue and restoration to happen, even though I know that His timing is always best. Thank you for sharing!

P.S. Your post also reminded me of one of my favorite Lauren Daigle songs, “Rescue” 🙂
Yes, I found that very interesting as well! It’s great the meaning we can find within Scripture! I totally agree, the waiting for God’s rescue is absolutely the most trying part. That’s awesome, that song was the inspiration for my post, I have found great encouragement from that song recently! Thanks for reading and commenting 🙂
